Story About Eri Silk
Tuesday, 27 Feb 2024
Hello, TemanKaIND Let us tell you about this wonderful story: Eri Silk.
Eri Silk comes from the cocoon of Samia Cynthia Ricini moth and also is considered as wild silk. However, it can be domesticated just like what we have been doing with local silkworm farmers in Pasuruan. In doing so, they use humble methods such as cultivating the silkworm in bamboo hut and manually collecting castor leaves, the food of Eri Silkworm, from the surrounding vegetation. Thus, making the Eri silk fibers is 100% natural.
What distinguishes Eri Silk from other silks is the fact that we cut open the cocoon carefully and take out the pupae before boiling the cocoon, hence it also called peace silk because the moth can continue its natural life cycle. Eri silk fibers are soft, gentle and hypoallergenic. It is generally heavier than other silks and hydrophilic. That's why the fibers can absorb water well and works finely with natural dyes. There are several steps needed to prepare the fibers before they are ready to be spun, such as drying the fibers under the sun and manually checking the fibers to remove any impurities.
Our Eri silk yarn is cotton like with a silky touch. It is sturdy and very suitable for hand-weaving. In 2019, we've succeeded in expanding the positive impact on the eri silkworm farming community in Pasuruan by adding a new product line; the first and only fabricated eri silk yarn in Indonesia with the composition 70% TENCEL™ fibers and 30% Eri silk fibers.
The handwoven eri silk fabric is soft to touch, comfortable, and breathable. It has isothermal properties that makes the fabric cool in the hot weather and warm in the cold weather. The making of our handwoven eri silk fabric leaves the smallest carbon footprint because most of the process are done manually. It is the true definition of uniquely sustainable fashion products and a solution of ethical fashion material that is both valuable and versatile.
